First Impressions
The Macanudo Vintage Cabinet II 1984 is a fascinating cigar simply because of its history. The 1984 Connecticut Shade wrapper crop was considered exceptional enough to receive Macanudo's Vintage designation, and the wrapper underwent two curing cycles. These cigars were originally produced in Jamaica, long before Macanudo production moved to the Dominican Republic.
Visually, the cigar carries its age remarkably well. The pre-light aromas are delicate, with old cedar, dry hay, nuts, and a faint natural sweetness. Unfortunately, the draw is noticeably loose, immediately suggesting that the smoke may lack some concentration.
Smoking Experience
First Third – Opens extremely gently with cedar, hay, cream, and a little toasted almond. There is an interesting aged-tobacco character in the background, but the loose draw makes the smoke feel thin and prevents the flavours from developing much intensity.
Second Third – The profile remains exceptionally mild. Cedar and dry hay dominate with occasional touches of cream and nuts, but very little progression occurs. For something with this much history behind it, the cigar becomes surprisingly bland, with the loose draw continuing to dilute the experience.
Final Third – A little more toasted tobacco and wood appear, but there is still no major transformation. The cigar remains smooth and remarkably composed considering its age, but the flavour profile never develops enough richness or complexity to make the experience truly memorable.
Pairings
Alcohol – Delamain Pale & Dry XO Cognac (France) - Elegant dried fruit, gentle oak, and floral character complement the delicate aged tobacco without completely overwhelming it.
Tea – Silver Needle Bai Hao Yin Zhen White Tea - Delicate sweetness and subtle floral character work naturally with such a mild, mature cigar.

Final Thoughts
The Macanudo Vintage Cabinet II 1984 is probably more interesting as an experience than it is purely as a smoke. Smoking a Jamaican Macanudo built around vintage 1984 tobacco carries genuine historical appeal. Unfortunately, history alone cannot compensate for what happens in the cigar. The very loose draw reduces flavour concentration, while the profile remains too bland and restrained for much of the smoke.
