First Impressions
The Umbagog Robusto Plus is a cigar that makes no attempt to look particularly elegant, and that is part of its appeal. Created by Steve Saka's Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust, Umbagog was designed as a more affordable, everyday smoke, using a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper that gives it a rugged, slightly rough appearance. The dark wrapper has plenty of character, with visible veins and an earthy, rustic feel. Pre-light aromas suggest dark tobacco, roasted coffee, earth, and a little pepper. It certainly looks like a cigar capable of delivering a bold and satisfying smoking experience. I have always appreciated the idea behind Umbagog. Not every cigar needs to be beautifully presented or positioned as something special. Sometimes all I want is a good, honest smoke that delivers flavour without unnecessary complications. Unfortunately, this particular example didn't quite manage that.
Smoking Experience
First Third β Opens with a fairly bold combination of dark earth, black pepper, and roasted coffee. There is some pleasant richness to the tobacco, with a little bittersweet cocoa developing underneath. However, the draw is immediately disappointing. Instead of a comfortable, natural resistance, it requires considerably more effort than I would like, restricting the amount of smoke and making the flavours harder to appreciate. The burn also starts showing signs of inconsistency, taking attention away from an otherwise promising opening.
Second Third β The profile settles into dark cocoa, earth, and roasted coffee, with the pepper becoming slightly less aggressive. There is a decent flavour foundation here, but the construction continues to get in the way. The poor draw and uneven burn make the experience unnecessarily frustrating. When the cigar performs properly, there are moments of enjoyable richness, but they are difficult to appreciate consistently. Instead of concentrating on the tobacco, I find myself paying far too much attention to how the cigar is burning.
Final Third β The flavours become darker and more intense, with earth, roasted coffee, and black pepper dominating. The cocoa remains in the background, although the overall profile becomes slightly drier and less balanced. Unfortunately, the construction problems never really disappear. The draw remains troublesome, and the burn continues to behave inconsistently. By this point, what should have been a satisfying, full-flavoured finish feels more like an exercise in patience than relaxation.
Pairings
Alcohol β Worthy Park Single Estate Reserve Jamaican Rum - Rich tropical fruit, toasted oak, vanilla, and warming spice provide a pleasant contrast to the Umbagog's earthy and peppery profile. The rum's natural sweetness helps soften the darker roasted flavours while offering enough character to stand alongside the tobacco.
Tea β Anhua Tian Jian Dark Tea (China) - Its earthy, woody, and gently smoky character complements the cigar's dark tobacco profile. The tea has enough depth to accompany the roasted coffee and cocoa notes without adding excessive bitterness.
Music Pairing
βGreen Grass and High Tidesβ β The Outlaws - Raw, energetic, and full of character, making it a natural companion for the Umbagog's rugged personality. The extended guitar work also provides a welcome distraction from the cigar's less cooperative moments.
Final Thoughts
Umbagog Robusto Plus is a cigar with an appealing concept and a flavour profile that should make it a very enjoyable everyday smoke. The combination of dark earth, roasted coffee, cocoa, and black pepper offers plenty of richness, and there is something refreshing about a cigar that prioritises tobacco over presentation. Unfortunately, the construction was a major disappointment. The draw was poor, the burn was inconsistent, and both problems persisted throughout the smoking experience. These are not minor imperfections that can easily be overlooked. They directly affect how the cigar delivers its flavours and, more importantly, how much enjoyment I get from smoking it. There were moments when the blend showed its potential, particularly when the roasted and earthy flavours came together. However, those moments were repeatedly overshadowed by the effort required to keep the experience enjoyable. I can forgive a slightly uneven burn or a draw that is not absolutely perfect, especially in a cigar designed for everyday smoking. But when both become persistent problems, the entire experience suffers. The tobacco itself has character, and I can understand why Umbagog has developed a following. This particular Robusto Plus, however, simply didn't perform well enough to leave a particularly positive impression.
Final Score: 5/10
Why not a 10?
The cigar suffered from a poor draw and persistent burn issues throughout the smoke. Although the earthy, roasted flavours showed some potential, the construction problems made the experience frustrating and prevented it from delivering the enjoyment I expected.
Only cigars that deliver flawless draw, balance, flavour evolution, construction and satisfaction get a 10.
