First Impressions
The Rojas Street Tacos Barbacoa Toro immediately catches the eye with its colourful, slightly unconventional band and beautifully applied Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. The cigar has a lovely reddish-brown appearance with a subtle oily sheen, and the construction feels excellent from the moment I pick it up. The bunch is evenly packed, the cap is neatly finished, and everything suggests a carefully made cigar. Pre-light aromas reveal cedar, roasted coffee, earth, and a touch of pepper, while the cold draw offers just the right amount of resistance. There is also a pleasant natural sweetness in the background. Everything feels promising, and I am genuinely looking forward to lighting this one.
Smoking Experience
- First Third – Opens with a beautiful combination of roasted coffee, cedar, and black pepper. The spice is lively without being aggressive, while a subtle sweetness and creamy smoke texture bring everything together. The draw is absolutely perfect, delivering generous smoke with very little effort. Combustion is excellent, and the flavours are immediately well-defined and balanced.
- Second Third – Toasted peanuts and a gentle savoury character begin to develop, adding another dimension to the coffee and cedar foundation. The pepper settles slightly, allowing the sweeter and nuttier elements to shine. There is a lovely interplay between roasted flavours, subtle earthiness, and natural tobacco sweetness. The cigar continues to burn beautifully, with an even burn line and excellent smoke production. Every draw feels rewarding, and the transitions happen naturally without losing the identity of the blend.
- Final Third – The profile becomes richer and slightly darker, with roasted coffee, cedar, pepper, and toasted nuts working together beautifully. A subtle smoky oak character adds depth, while the sweetness remains present enough to keep everything balanced. Most importantly, the cigar never becomes harsh, bitter, or excessively hot. The draw remains flawless, the burn stays consistent, and the flavours continue delivering right down to the final inch. An absolutely outstanding finish.
Pairings
- Alcohol – Hampden Estate Great House Jamaican Rum - Rich tropical fruit, warming spice, toasted oak, and the distinctive funky character of Jamaican rum create a wonderful contrast to the cigar's roasted coffee, pepper, and savoury sweetness. A pairing with plenty of personality that enhances the blend without overpowering it.
- Tea – Feng Huang Dan Cong Mi Lan Xiang Oolong (China) - Beautiful honeyed sweetness, delicate floral aromas, and a gentle roasted character complement the cigar's nutty and woody notes. Its natural complexity works particularly well with the evolving flavours of the Barbacoa.
Music Pairing
“Oye Como Va” – Santana - Warm, rhythmic, and effortlessly enjoyable, with enough energy and character to match the cigar's lively opening. The Latin influence also feels perfectly suited to the Street Tacos concept.
Final Thoughts
Rojas Street Tacos Barbacoa Toro is an absolutely outstanding cigar and a perfect example of why I enjoy exploring smaller, independent cigar brands. It doesn't rely on extravagant packaging, complicated marketing, or an outrageous price tag to impress. Instead, it delivers where it matters most: flavour, balance, complexity, and construction. The combination of roasted coffee, toasted peanuts, cedar, black pepper, and natural sweetness creates a beautifully rounded profile that continues to develop throughout the smoke. Nothing feels forced or exaggerated, and the transitions are interesting without becoming unnecessarily complicated. What impressed me just as much as the flavours was the construction. The draw was perfect, combustion was flawless, and the cigar required absolutely no corrections, relights, or additional attention. I could simply sit back and enjoy every minute. This is exactly what I want from a great cigar. Rich enough to keep me interested, balanced enough to remain enjoyable, and beautifully constructed from beginning to end. I would happily smoke another one immediately.
Final Score: 10/10
Why not a 10? Absolutely nothing to complain about. Outstanding flavours, beautiful complexity, perfect balance, and flawless construction throughout. A genuinely exceptional cigar that deserves every point.
