‍ ‍Tasting Notes

  • Dark Chocolate – Rich and slightly sweet core

  • Espresso – Deep roasted character

  • Black Pepper – Controlled but noticeable spice

  • Earth – Heavy finish with hints of oak

First Impressions

The E.P. Carrillo Maduro Robusto has a dark Mexican San AndrΓ©s wrapper with a rich oily sheen and a very attractive appearance. In hand it feels solid and well packed. Pre-light aromas reveal cocoa, coffee beans, and a touch of pepper. The cold draw is slightly firmer than ideal, hinting at the tightness that will remain throughout the smoke.

Smoking Experience

  • First Third – Opens with dark chocolate and espresso backed by a line of black pepper. The profile is rich and enjoyable, though the draw is noticeably tight.

  • Second Third – Earth and oak begin to appear, giving the cigar more body. Unfortunately the restricted draw continues to hold back the smoke production and intensity.

  • Final Third – The cigar remains flavorful, but toward the end it becomes slightly bland and loses some of the richness shown earlier. The tight draw never fully improves.

Pairings

  • Alcohol – Pedro XimΓ©nez Sherry β€œDon PX Gran Reserva” (Spain) - Dense raisin sweetness and rich molasses notes work beautifully with the cigar’s chocolate and espresso profile.

  • Tea – Yunnan Dian Hong Golden Tips Black Tea - Naturally malty and cocoa-like, it enhances the cigar’s sweeter maduro notes while softening the tight, drier finish.

Music Pairing

β€œBaby” – Gal Costa
Light and unexpected, bringing some brightness to a cigar that becomes too serious and slightly bland toward the end.

Final Thoughts

E.P. Carrillo Maduro Robusto offers rich maduro flavors with dark chocolate, espresso, and earth, but the tight draw restricts the experience and the final third loses some complexity.

Final Score: 8/10
Why not a 10?
The tight draw held back the cigar from the beginning, and the final third became slightly bland instead of building toward a stronger finish.

Only cigars that deliver flawless draw, balance, flavour evolution, construction and satisfaction get a 10.
